Stigma and Discrimination

Welcome to 2008. In the last blog posting we asked for your ideas. Someone discussed whether your mind can control HIV. What about those people who have been HIV-positive for a long time, and don’t take HIV medications? How do they stay healthy? How do they handle stigma and discrimination? Do they tell others about their HIV status or live in secrecy? Although we are into a New Year, there are unfortunately some things that haven’t changed, such as the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV. What are we going to do about it?

Well...talking about it might be a good place to start. I think as soon as AIDS became chronic instead of terminal, closeted gay men returned to the game they grew up with: keeping everything a secret, no matter what the cost. I wonder...is it noble to suffer silently, or are most of us cowards? In the 80's when those guys didn't have a choice, they withstood horrible social pressure to make a difference. Though that may have been a generations defining moment, I don't know what ours will be. Obviously if we thought it was acceptable to be poitive we'd probably crave a little tea and sympathy. I don't know how it is Canada, but in the US, letting your employer find out what kind of a burden you are on their insurance premiums feels risky.
